TRAVEL ABROAD
WITH KIDS -
PACKING
CARRY-ON / HANDBAG:
For information on British Airline Carriers - please see their respective websites directly -
MY SUGGESTIONS FORE CARRY-ONS- IF NOT UK travel!
- Cell phone or two way radio (see more info via link) Either rented, your own or bought -
you can purchase one like we did at www.mobalrental.com - spent $49 per cell phone
plus charges.
- Euros or currency for your destination – about $300 worth – for something to eat after
plane, taxis, tips, etc! (order these 2 weeks before your trip from your bank)
- Extra pair of undergarments – (in case of lost luggage and so you’ll feel more fresh)
and a pair of sock for cold feet during flight
- Tissues - allergies can act up on stale airplanes
- Socks – feet get very cold on airplanes (business, first class will provide these for you
usually)
- Map of destination and travel guide book - I love Eyewitness travel books!
- Good Book
- Names, addresses of hotels/villas (some taxis claim ignorance of address of hotels)
- Tylenol or Advil
- Small bag of toiletries, if possible - chapstick
- Most 4oz sizes are available these days - Target carries some of my needs - like
contact solutions and don't forget contact case and extra contacts, if you have them.

SUGGESTIONS FOR KIDS CARRY-ONS - Gameboy type items, crayons, Color Wonder
markers and pads, stickers, snacks, Ipod, journal to write in and camera - inexpensive digital.
MUST HAVES for LUGGAGE:
- Black t-shirt , Black pants, Black cardigan – BLACK
- One scarf (some churches won’t let you enter without covered shoulders)
- Copy of passports, documents, credit card telephone numbers – if originals get lost,
these will speed up Consulate time by hours – I know this one too well, unfortunately!
- Depending on how much you plan to purchase, I usually bring a small, nylon duffle in
case there’s no more room in my luggage – this way I don’t have to buy another piece at
the airport!
- Comfortable shoes – not tennis shoes – but black shoes and white ones(ECCOs, now
come in stylish sandal styles - which I love - look great and made for walking!!! www.
zappos.com or www.shoes.com for a good deal on these - (I've personally saved 20% -
50% off of department store prices on these sites.)
- Travel book so you can review what you want to see while here)
- Map of metro or train station schedules – if not in duffel– Borders sells these
- Small PORTABLE umbrella or wet gear (Spring)
- One of my fav ideas - Pre-labeled names of friends for postcards
- A handbag that has room for the umbrella - you can always buy one on vacation!
- Zip lock baggies - for snacks, wet clothes, etc
- Tylenol or Advil (they may NOT have these where you are going -though they will have
other local brands) MUST NOW be in checked luggage.
- SNACKS - YES, snacks for picky eaters - I used to pack a large unopened container of
goldfish for my 4 year old (and double bagged the container) - anything that doesn't
spoil will be fine! It works until you can get to a market or grocery or hotel.
Other ideas - Maps by Mapquest, folding maps by "Streetwise" - excellent maps! Also, Eurorail.
com has excellent suggestions - see Planes Trains Autos section in this website!
Last Note - I never have my kids wear clothing that scream "American" for several reasons:
- I like that they are "dressed up" (If you consider Gymmies sales clothes dressed up)
- In this climate today, I am more at ease with the ambiguity of our nationality - especially
in heavily populated areas such as the Eiffel Tower, etc.
- People have stolen from us just because they recognised us to be "rich" Americans!
Not fair - but a popular assumption among other countries.
