A great stroller - cannot begin to understand how important this is! Even in the later ages! My personal preference for singles: MacLaren - fold super easily - has a shoulder strap for carrying up and down subways, trains, etc. Peg Perego ones also are nice -
MacLaren or Combi for the DOUBLE STROLLERS are great - IMPOSSIBLE to handle a huge "Limo-like" stroller - Graccos are great - I had them for home - but keep them there and keep you and your husband sane while abroad! Could NOT get in or out of shops, markets, restaurants - you name it! Even didn't fit on some sidewalks!
You can buy good strollers at www.amazon.com or at www.babystyle.com - shop the sales and even ebay has them too - just read carefully shipping costs and whether or not they are new, used, older, etc.
SIT AND STAND variety: I LOVE the Pliko P3 by Peg Perego - the sit and Stand kind - my two year old in in the seat and my little girl stands on the back when we're hoofin' it through miles of Parisian, New York sites. Plus - I can keep a much better eye on her if she's standing on the stroller! Highly recommended - BUT - does not fold down as easily and is heavier the MacLaren - though MacLaren doesn't offer sit and stand that I know of yet.
ALSO - for the very young- we used a BABY CARRIER- we've had all kinds but I prefer Bjorn - I bought mine new on ebay for a steal! It was much easier to get my baby in and out for changes and she seemed to sleep better (longer, later) in the carrier than the stroller.
Must haves for kids according to age group:
0-1year = 2 bottles, at least 50 diapers - yes, pack them! I had the HARDEST time getting anyone to understand what I needed at a small Italian pharmacy! It literally took a village to get diapers!
The bonus is that if you pack your diapers and wipes and formula in a duffle bag - once the diapers, etc get used, you have room to store your souvenirs! I also pack an extra, cheap duffle bag from Target just in case!
If you use formula - pack this too! A pain to begin with but you will be happy you did! Blanket and NEW toy. My favourites are Mr. Whoozit, "Parent Toys" Babies really don't need a ton of stuff on vacation.
1-2 years = 2 sippy cups/bottles, favourite toy and blanket - Parent Magazine approved - Battat 2 pack "cell" phone and keys with messages from you - colouring stuff that you've saved for the trip. My son at this age LOVES "sticky" books - Thomas and fire trucks! Also, large crayons. If you have a favourite DVD - you can bring along a portable DVD player for this little person, as well as the others.
2-4 years = sippy cups, fav snacks (at this age, my middle child got picky with food) Crayons, magic markers - Crayola's genius that doesn't write on anything but the special paer it comes with! Brilliant! Sticker books, bedtime story book. Small felt boards (sometimes at Costco) are great - they have a back pocket for the felt friends when not using.
4-7 years = Reading books - brand new one - not seen before trip. Journal to write/draw about their trip and sticker books. My kids loved Pixters - fun educational game toys and now they have video ones too. They are going to want stuff there - cheap souvenirs and "Target - like" stores do exist there - use them for this--DO NOT buy American toys overseas - WAY TOO EXPENSIVE - and why anyway?
7= 10 years- ELECTRONICS! Bring batteries - they're a fortune overseas - Also journal with gel pens and stickers, fun markers. Travel book on where you are going so they can help decide where to go - helps include them in the process. Game boys, etc. Puzzle books, cool colouring books on where you are traveling to or artists you will be seeing. (see books for kids section) There are also "gross" history books that are age appropriate - ie - (Uncle John's Electrifying Bathroom Reader for Kids Only!) go into the store to look at these first hand first! You can order them from your local store and not have to purchase them if you don't like the content! But, I guarantee - boys this age LOVE these books - I have it on good authority!
10 on - you guys will need to help in this area please! I'm not there yet with my family! -
